What is the Difference and When Does Each One Matter?
One of the most common questions patients ask us is "My doctor ordered a scan, which kind is it and why does it matter?
It is a great question, and understanding the difference can actually help you feel more in control of your own health.
MRI - Soft Tissue Detail Without Radiation MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses magnetic fields and radio waves - no radiation at all. This creates an exxceptionally detailed image of soft tissues. This makes it the preferred choice of evaluating the brain, spinal cord, joints, ligaments, tendons, and organs. If your doctor is looking at your knee after injury, investigating a neurological concern, or assessing the spine, MRI is typically the right tool. MRI scans take longer than PET/CT Scans and require you to stay still, but the level of detail provided for soft tissue structures is unmatched.

PET / CT - Speed, Structural Clarity, and Functional Insight At Vantage, our CT scans are performed as PET / CT, Meaning that you get two powerful technoligies working together in a single appointment. The CT component uses X-ray technology and advances computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of bones, blood vessels, the lungs, and abdominal organs. The PET component layers on top of that by revealing how organs and tissues are functioning at a metabolic level, detecting abnormal activity that structural imaging can miss. A PET / CT is typically completed quickly and is especially valuable for cancer detection and staging, evaluating heart disease, and identifying neurological conditions. When speed and depth of information both matter, PET / CT delivers.

So Which One Is Right For You? The honest answer is: that decision belongs to your physician and our radiologists. What you can know is that at Vantage, both MRI and PET / CT are available, both are performed on advanced equipment, and both are reviewed by a board certified radiologist. You do not have to shop around for different services at different facilities.
