Cancer, What Can We Do?

Cancer is a big deal but you don't need me to tell you that. Everyone has known someone who has been affected by the disease. Did you know that in 2017 in the United States alone there will be an estimated 1,688,780 new cancer cases? Specifically, in Oklahoma, an estimated 18,710 new cancer cases and a whopping 8,200 estimated deaths due to cancer are expected in 2017. This means nearly 44% of people diagnosed with cancer in Oklahoma will die from the disease.

People always wonder how could they possible help against these alarming statistics. There are several ways anyone can help. The most obvious is, of course, donating to one of the organizations who fund research and development or help the families affected, whether it's with services they provide or financially. Understandably, not everyone is able to afford to help this way. However, there are so many other options to choose from. Volunteering for an organization dedicated to fighting cancer is one way you could help. Volunteers can help in a variety of areas. From helping organize events -- to possibly visiting with some of the patients. Helping raise awareness is another seemingly small thing that could have a big impact. There is more than one way to raise awareness such as participating in one of the races for the cure or something as simple as sharing a post on your social media sites.

There are plenty of ways for someone to get involved in the fight against cancer. The month of September is a great time to start. September is cancer awareness month for several types of cancer:

  • Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

  • Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month

  • Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month

  • National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

  • National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

  • Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month
